Random Thoughts and a tag

Just a few more days in 2008. It's time to reflect, to think about those that were lost this year and to remember the events that formed our year...both globally and personally.

The big thing for me in 2008 is that I turned 62 and was able to start my social security. I was living on my retirement check alone and it was difficult to make ends meet. My SS check has brought me to a comfort level that makes it possible to no longer worry about finances. Life is good.

The next wonderful thing in 2008 for me is that I decided to adopt another kitty and brought Gizmo into my life. It's hard to explain to folks that 'just don't get it', the joy that a pet can bring. It's especially wonderful for someone who lives alone. She has taken over and is now the Queen of the apartment. And, the most wonderful thing is - are you ready for this - she doesn't shed. I don't know why (and don't care) but this kitty does NOT shed a hair. I love that. I'm so easy to please huh.

The world waits to see what our new president will do to make a difference in the future of America. While I did not vote for Pres. Elect Obama, I am the first to admit that the results of this election was an historical event. I am pleased that our country has come so far. I wonder if Rosa Parks or even Martin Luther King thought this would ever happen? As I've said before, it's a long way from the bottom of a slave ship to the White House. What an amazing (and often sad and disgraceful) journey. My g/daughter is bi-racial (as you can see from her pictures). Some time ago I found the complete set of the TV mini-series "Roots" and bought it for her. She and I sat and watched it together and I answered her questions as we went. Her dad was so surprised and grateful that I did that and later borrowed them to show his other daughter. Just as I want to know my history (from the French and the Irish side), I felt it was important for Jackie to understand hers.

Anyway, this was intended to be a short note. So much for that. Have a great week everyone. And btw Beth, your guys killed my guys in the game yesterday. Grrrr.

Hugs, Joyce

  5. Joyce, I remember when "Roots" first was on TV, and what a powerful miniseries it was. I'm glad you were able to watch it with your granddaughter, and discuss. Things have changed so much even since that time!!

I apologized to you on my blog for the Colts win. :) The thing is, it was a meaningless game for both teams, since the Titans clinched the division, and both teams are in the playoffs! Both teams took out their starters early on, so I was only half watching.

Hugs to you (and to Gizmo!),
    Beth

  8. I forgot to tell you how much I like the picture with the candle. So pretty. Now to the raccoon poop since I don't think I have your e-mail address. You know how a chicken and a cow look different? well their poop looks different too. You just get to recognise the different kinds after a while and John helps me too. That was a nasty subject, wasn't it?

  9. I think that was a good thing to do, Joyce, to watch Roots with your grand-daughter! I remember the impact that series had on me years ago when it was first out.

I think all in all 2008 was a good year for you! Gizmo is definitely a keeper if she doesn't shed, but I know you would keep her anyway; she's such a cutie!

wishing you a fantastically wonderful new year!

  10. Hello Miss Joyce,

You are truly a wonderful Grandmother and I know that your granddaughter will always remember what you did for her. Just as I know our New President remembers what His grandmother did for him.

    God Bless
